Stand-In Groom ~ Kaye Dacus

January 19th, 2009 by vicki

Here’s what this week’s guest reviewer had to say …

Stand-In Groom by Kaye Dacus was a fun book to read. I enjoyed the main character, Anne Hawthorne. She was very gifted in coordinating weddings and truly had a heart for the couples she worked with. Anne’s love for the Lord was evident in the way she talked with Him often throughout her day. That is always an encouragement to me.

I had my own ideas before I started to read this book. You know, by the title I was sure I knew how this was going to play out. I was wrong! Dacus threw in a twist that I wasn’t expecting.

Congratulations to Kaye Dacus! I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Quick Time Out

January 16th, 2009 by vicki

blonde-chickenMost of my posts lately have been shared by dear friends who are reviewing CFBA books for me. I’ve been working on 6 messages to supplement the Bible study I just finished writing and haven’t taken the time to blog. I just had to take a time out from working here to share a couple of funnies with you all …

Caleb (6) has been sitting on the bed behind me for the last twenty minutes. The only way to describe what he’s doing is to borrow the phrase my parents used to use when describing me … He’s running off at the  mouth. And out of that mouth comes the funniest stuff.

Daddy said we could splurge and order in supper tonight. Three of us wanted pizza and 2 wanted Chinese. That’s seriously extravagant for the Tiedes, but Daddy said, “whatever” and we took him at his word. After I ordered Caleb’s sweet and sour chicken he asked, “Did you order me blonde chicken?”

“You want a blonde chicken?”

“I LOVE blonde chicken!” he answered. Read the rest of this entry »

Sweetwater Gap ~ Denise Hunter

January 14th, 2009 by vicki

According to my friend, Julie, Sweetwater Gap is a 5-star book! Check out her review here:

“I truly enjoyed Sweetwater Gap! Denise Hunter had me hooked right away. I especially like how Hunter weaves some mystery into the lives of the characters and sprinkles these throughout the book. Josie Mitchell is a sweet person who is also very hurt and confused about her past. She cannot escape her past “demons” and yet does a superb job of trying to run from them. I found myself getting frustrated with her choices at times, yet I needed to keep reading to find out what would happen next.

Josie has a very stable family in her sister, brother-in-law, and aunt. Hunter paints a great picture of a family that is there for one another. I enjoyed feeling like part of that family as they shared meals together and worked together in the orchard. This is the type of book that is hard to put down! A sequel would be great, as I would love to spend more time with the Mitchell family.” J.H. Read the rest of this entry »

Kiss ~ Ted Dekker and Erin Healy

January 12th, 2009 by vicki

The Review~ Today’s review is from a 15 year old young man who devoured Kiss in one sitting. I think his enthusiastic review speaks volumes. I suggest you buy this one for yourself!

“The word ‘WOW’ is likely the best description of Ted Dekker’s and Erin Healy’s book. From the moment I picked up this well-written masterpiece until I completed reading it, I could not seem to put it down. Amazing, that any book could grip you so tightly and force you to feel the emotions of each and every character within. My heart wrenched every time Shauna despaired, my blood boiled intensely with the vile schemings of her villainous oppressors, and my fist followed Landon’s right through the wall as he discovered the truth about his daughter. It would be incomprehensibly hard to surpass this book, and it entirely commands my view of great fiction.” ~ Caleb Anthony Read the rest of this entry »

The Perfect Match ~ Susan May Warren

January 7th, 2009 by vicki

Hello friends! Yes, I know it’s already January 7th and I’ve been negligent about blogging over the holidays. I”m blaming it on the fact that I was completing a big writing project and now am working on 6 new messages. More on that later.  Today I’m sharing with you the proverbial carrot that is dangling out there for me and will be my reward when I finish all my work!

Susan May Warren’s novel, The Perfect Match, has just been repackaged and is ready for purchase! Susan is a fellow Minnesota girl and she hasn’t written anything I haven’t loved. I just got my copy in the mail yesterday and I can hear it calling to me now! Oh, but I must wait! Here’s the scoop …

About the Author ~

susan_may_warrenSusan grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. Her favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota is where she met her husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living.

The north woods easily became the foundation for her first series, The Deep Haven series, based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. Her first full-length book, Happily Ever After, became a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

As an award winning author, Susan returned home in 2004, to her native Minnesota after serving for eight years with her husband and four children as missionaries with SEND International in Far East Russia. She now writes full time from Minnesota’s north woods and the beautiful town that she always dreamed of living in.

You can sample a chapter of each and every one of Susan’s novels, on her website, HERE.

About the Book ~

perfectmatchEllie Karlson is new to Deep Haven. As the town’s interim fire chief, she is determined to lead the local macho fire crew in spite of their misconceptions about her. But when someone begins setting deadly fires, Ellie faces the biggest challenge of her life. Especially when sparks fly with one of the volunteers on her crew: Pastor Dan Matthews. As Ellie battles to do her job and win the respect of her crew, she finds that there is one fire she can’t fight—the one Dan has set in her heart.
